Dichotomy

I imagine that I'm not the only one to feel this way. It's probably pretty common, even though it seems like such a dichotomy. To explain my feelings, first let me tell you about an experience from my mission. I served a mission in Santa Cruz, Bolivia for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a missionary, I was a confidante for many of the people I served. Everyone told us about their health concerns, financial struggles, relationship troubles and all of their problems in general. About half-way though my mission (I'd been out almost nine months) I served with the most amazing companion. Actually all of my companions were truly amazing, but this one was simply angelic. Hermana Perez was from Cochabamba, Bolivia. She'd grown up in poverty with an alcoholic father. Everyone had to leave the home whenever he drank (which was often), because he was violent when drunk. Hermana Perez grew up in these difficult circumstances. When she was thirteen years old, she saw some LDS missionaries on the street and talked to them. She listened to them and knew that their message was true. She wanted to be baptized. She asked her father for permission to attend church with them. He told her she could as long as she finished a long list of chores first. It reminded me on Cinderella's step-mother, because Hermana Perez had to get up at two o'clock in the morning to get everything done before church at 8:30 AM. Well, she did it. She continued to do that every single week until she left on her mission at age 21. What dedication to get up that early to work so that she could have permission to attend church!

While I was serving with her and listening constantly to people's trials, I began to question, "Why me?" Normally when people ask themselves this question, they do it in frustration with their hardships. Mine was quite the opposite. Never in my life had a been afraid that I was going to be beat up; Never had I gone to bed hungry unless I was fasting; Never had I been sick or hurt without access to medical care; I had never had an immediate family member die. I even knew that I would see my loved ones again after this life, so my agony wouldn't even have been quite as tragic. It seemed that everyone else's life was harder than mine. How is that fair?

I really struggled with the question, "How could a loving Heavenly Father give everyone else such difficult trials and yet bless me so greatly?" I talked a lot with Hermana Perez about it. She gave me some wonderful insight: God allows us to be in situations that will be best for our and other's growth. We talked about how Bolivia's poverty made them very receptive to accepting the truth of the Restored Gospel. Perhaps I didn't have a lot of trials in this stage of my life so that I would have the energy and ability to reach out to others. I wasn't sure of the reasons, but I threw myself whole-heartedly into serving others and found great joy in sharing the good news of the gospel.Sometimes I still feel that same way now. I have such an angelic little baby and two cute little boys. I have a hard-working husband who has a good job, so that I can stay at home full-time. I have a testimony of the Gospel; I understand that I am a daughter of a loving Heaving Father. I know that Jesus Christ gave us the perfect example in life and then gave up that life to atone for our sins. Through the Gospel I recieve such comfort and joy. Sometimes I think, "Why me? How could a loving Heavenly Father give everyone else such difficult trials and yet bless me so greatly?" Sometimes I can't help but wonder: "Am I about to get cancer? Is Brad going to lose his job? Is one of my children going to die? Something horrible is going to happen to make all fair in the world.

Then, usually a few minutes later, I have two rascals fighting, a baby to feed, a messy house and a husband who won't be home until ten o'clock at night. Sometimes I feel like I run around cleaning up messes and getting after kids. At the end of the day my house is messier than before and I'm so discouraged at the poor behavior of my kids and the poor way I handled it. I have so much room for improvement.

I feel like much of my life is spent going back and forth between feeling so very fortunate and feeling so very overwhelmed.
Does anyone else feel that way?

Random Skills

Once I mentioned that I know how to solve a Rubik's cube. I'll forget about it for long periods of time and then see one and play around with it for a while. I learned how to do it from some friends in college. It's one of those random skills that is not really useful, but I enjoy doing it anyway. It would probably fit in the Napoleon Dynamite quote, "You know, like nunchuck skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills. Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills." Brad probably went out with me because I had Rubik's cube skills. . .that's certainly not true. I don't think he knew I could solve it until we'd been dating for a while, but it makes me want to watch Napoleon Dynamite since I haven't seen it since it came out on DVD.

So, back to the Rubik's cube, I'm not very fast. For this post I looked up the records and found that several people solve it in under 20 seconds and some as fast as 7 seconds; That's crazy fast! I usually take 4-5 minutes, so I'm relatively very pokey. I like to do different designs to mix it up. Moving the centers around and making checkered boxes is really fast. Sometimes I'll solve it checkered too. It took me about ten minutes to do all of the designs above (a few of them are just different angles).

So what random talents do you have?

Kind of a Stretch

Normally Brad and I don't wear costumes for Halloween. Brad doesn't like to and it's not as fun for me if he won't dress up too. I'm happy to say that this year, we actually did. We even have a family theme, although you wouldn't think so to look at us. When I look at this photo taken at Brad's work party, I imagine I hear the Sesame Street song, "One of these things is not like the others." So if Brad really does fit in, I bet you're wondering how. I'll give you a hint: Have you ever seen Disney's Sword in the Stone? Brad is a character from that. I know, it's a stretch. The other day Brad made one of those silly JibJab Halloween videos with our family's faces. Check it out if you want a laugh!

Halloween Carnival

Every year the youth ages 12-18 put on a Halloween Carnival at our church. They set up different games and help the little kids play. Our boys loved it again this year. Here is Brad with the boys doing the cookie walk.

Ahead of Jas is his little buddy Jonny as Woody. Painting mini pumpkins.Jason was supposed to throw the rings, but just ran up and set them on the bottles. This is an awful picture and no one is looking, but here is Parker with his friends Aidan and Isaiah. Parker lied down to eat the donut off the string. Afterwards Jason ran over, lied down on his back, grabbed a donut and then ran away with the string still attached. It was hilarious and I wish I had it on video. Here he is with his loot!

Family Resemblance?

Of course a common question when you have a new baby is, "Who does he/she look like?" It's fun to compare photos of our children and even our own baby photos. It's a little tricky with just a few photos, but here they are:

That's Brad, Jen, Parker, Jason and Liesel. Below are the kids sleeping:

All my kids have similar noses and chins. We've been hoping for a blue-eyed baby like Daddy, but they've all got dark eyes like me. Here's some older comparisons of Jason and Parker. This first one is at about 6 months:Just over a year:About 21 months:It will be fun to see how our kids look as they get older. If you want to see more family comparisons, look here and here. What do you think?

Liesel is Smiling!

There are so many great milestones that kids have as they're growing, but learning to smile is one of the most fun! Liesel started smiling intentionally just before five weeks.

She's such a pleasant little thing. I know I'm spoiled rotten to have such a good-natured baby. I'm also LOVING having a girl. It's so much fun to dress her up. Even when she's basically in sweat pants I love that she can pull of an adorable bow and fancy shoes. Love it I adore seeing all these cute little smiles these days! It puts a grin on my face too!

Halloween Preview

On Saturday we had a little Halloween party at Brad's Aunt Kim's. We always have such a great time together and the kids were adorable in their costumes.

My mom helped me sew wings on Parker's old dinosaur costume to make Jason a dragon. He doesn't mind the costume too much, but he isn't to crazy about the hood. I love this kid's chubby cheeks! Both Parker and Jason are crazy about their little sister. It is so much fun to see how much they adore our little "princess"!

Cousins and Dinosaurs

A week ago we went to the Ogden Dinosaur park with Brad's mom, sisters and their kids. Jada was in town so Chase and Janelle decided to bring her up. I love this photo of some of the kids.

My kids aren't too cooperative when it comes to taking pictures. The kids kind of rush through the museum, but some parts really catch their attention, like these dinosaur nests.

Jada, Belle and Parker I have the best in-laws ever! Here's Jackie with Isabelle and Isaac:
Chase, Janelle and Kade:
Jen with Will and Adam:
Will is only two months older than Liesel, but makes her look like a premie shrimp. Love it!
The kids love digging for dinosaurs in the sand pit.
Jason was wondering what was up with the sparse bristles. Thanks for coming up to Ogden and thanks for letting me steal all your photos!
We'll miss Jada until she comes again. Jada, Isabelle and Liesel are the only girl grandchildren. Isabelle turns five in a few weeks and has been waiting a long time to have a little girl cousin. Yay for girls!

Fire Station Tour

Last week I took the boys to the fire station. Of course the boys love it! The firemen were great with them. Here they're practicing stop, drop and roll.

We so glad our neighbor Blake and his mom Jamie came with us. The boys loved sitting in the ambulance and fire trucks. Now Parker wants to be fireman (along with about eight other professions). We had a lot of fun at the the station and the boys are still enjoying their cool hats. I took these photos of Liesel that same day. They were all taken within about 20 seconds. Babies change expressions quickly. What might be surprising is that they were actually taken in backwards order. She was upset, but luckily she calmed down.

"Sometimes You Want to Go"

"...where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came!"
I never really watched the show Cheers, but I can relate with the theme song. I love friends that are always glad to see you. I was lucky enough to hang out with two such friends last week. We met my friend Candice and her kids for lunch. I forgot to take photos, but I still want to mention it because hanging out with her makes me happy.

Later that day I met up with another one of my favorite people. Kate and I met in 7th grade and have been friends ever since. They just moved to a new home and my kids had a grand time in their backyard.
LouLou loved watching Baby Liesel.
While we were down in Salt Lake we got to see my parents. My dad took the boys outside with some sidewalk chalk. I love that both sets of grandparents enjoy getting down and playing with the kids.
Going back to the good friends idea: Growing up and during my single days I was always very social. I wasn't necessarily super outgoing, but I would hang out with friends pretty much every day. If that were still feasible, I'm sure that I would enjoy it immensely. Unfortunately, it doesn't really work out every day any more. It is still true that I love seeing friends and if you call or come by, I'm sure I'll be glad you did!

Enjoying Fall

A couple weeks ago we went up in the mountains to enjoy the beautiful leaves.

The boys loved collecting their favorites.

We've also been making a bunch of fall crafts. When we were cutting out ghosts and making corn syrup jack o'lanterns, Parker said, "I know what I can be! For a job I'll be a craft maker!" Now he's got another occupations added to list of hopeful career paths!

Angels and Rascals

Little Miss Liesel Grace is truly an angelic baby doll! Up until she was three weeks old, I kept setting my alarm to wake me up to feed her at least every four hours. Most of the time she'd wake me up earlier, but sometimes she'd sleep well enough for me to go wake her up. Even when she did awake, she'd squawk a few times and then stop as if listening for me. I had time to use the restroom and change her before she'd start crying. Parker was certainly not that way. Once he woke up, he wanted to eat and I'd better do it now. If I waited, he'd scream so much that we couldn't get him to calm down, even to eat. So, back to Liesel, she is so calm and mild. After three weeks I called the pediatrician to find out when I could let her try sleeping longer at night. She'd been in the office at four days old and again at 14 days. In that week and a half she'd grown from 6 lbs. 15 oz. to 8 lbs. 3 oz. Since she was certainly growing well, the doctor told me to go ahead and let her sleep if she would. Well, she will. For the past week she's been going at least six hours between night feedings. Once she went eight hours. What?? My 3 1/2 week old baby sleeps that well at night? Yes, like I said, she's an angel!

Having a girl is so much fun! I'm loving dressing her up every day. Maybe after a while I'll get lazy, but for now I love all the headbands and cute shoes! By the way, does anyone know where I can get some really cute long and short sleeve white onesies to use as undershirts? For now I'm using the unisex and I'd love something more feminine.
You would think that with such a good-natured baby that life would be simple, but with two crazy boys, that isn't always the case. The other day I walked into their room to find this:

We've really had to buckly down on the rule that if I have to clean up their toys, I put them away up high and out of reach for a while. We've also had to remove some of the toys for a while. I like to put a bunch away and rotate them out, but I'd been lax. No more. These two little rascals are not very good about falling asleep at bedtime. They've broken the blinds in their room and I'm hesitant to buy new ones. They still have curtains, of course, but they just open those for more light. Now that it's getting dark earlier it's better, but they still run around in the dark playing. The other day I came in to check on them and found this:

Really they're pretty good little boys, but sometimes they give me a run for my money.
